One of the perks of my job is that I can watch TV while I perform many of my tasks.  And one of the shows I’ve taken to (re-)watching is Little House on the Prairie.  I’m sure many of us remember loving this as a show from our childhoods.  But my question is why??  Obviously I like it enough to be watching it over again now, but why this show didn’t scare me half to death as a kid?  Instead, I just remember thinking how cool it would be to be blind!

Let’s take a moment and try to remember just a few of the disasters that took place on the show:

  • Babies dying all over the place!  Mary lost a baby (why didn’t she pick it up when she was running out of the fire?).  Laura lost a baby.  Ma lost a baby.  Shall I continue?
  • And speaking of fires, there were a lot of fires back then!  Almost everyone, at one time or another, had their house or barn catch on fire.  Then the blind school caught on fire (stupid Albert and his cigars), too!
  • Thinking of Albert reminded me of his various trials: drug addiction (morphine) and eventually dying of Leukemia.  I will say, however, Albert’s battle with drugs scared me sober!
  • Blindness!  So many blind children!
  • Orphans!  So many orphans!
  • Stage coach accidents.
  • More fires!
  • And don’t even get me started on the finale!  (Don’t know what I’m talking about?  Well, basically, they blew up the whole town!)

There is no way that is even a complete list.  What are some other disasters on the show?

So why am I re-watching this show now?  I think it’s for the same reason I watched back then.  Amidst all the trials and tribulations, there were good actors, good characters, and some funny bits.  Let’s face it, the best shows are the Mrs. Oleson ones.  And who doesn’t love when young Laura falls for the much older Almanzo and keeps telling him, “I’m not a little girl.  I’m a woman!”  All she had to do was put her hair up and he believed her!

Interested in joining me in watching one town deal with more disasters than any you’ve ever seen before (was this the original Happy Town? Little House on the Prairie – Don’t let the name fool you”)?  Check out the Hallmark channel at 12pm and 1pm (eastern).
